As Jammu Metro project is likely to get nod in the Administrative Council meeting today, people from various walks of lives from different areas of Jammu have demanded that Metro route should be realigned.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has set September 2024 deadline to start operations on the metro project for Jammu. The Jammu and Srinagar Metro are expected to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.9500 Crore.
The first phase shall have 17 proposed Jammu metro stations including Bantalab, Chinore, Roop Nagar, Janipur, High Court, Lower Laxmi nagar, Ambphalla, Secretariat, Raghunath Temple, Exhibition Ground, Jammu University, Panama Chowk, Jammu Railway Station, Trikuta Nagar, Trikuta Nagar Extension, Marble Market and Greater Kailash.
According to the Civil Society members the metro is passing through the busiest parts of the Jammu city which are hubs of Commercial Activity including Janipur, Roop Nagar, Marble Market and others. If the construction of Metro is carried out on the proposed route, thousands of people who own business establishments in these posh areas shall be rendered jobless. Since the construction work will take years, the normal activity in the entire area will come to standstill. This will also impact commuters, school and office goers besides paralyzing the entire business and economic activity in the area.
Also, the proposed metro route while passing through Trikuta Nagar Extension shall require construction of huge piers in the Ravi Canal which shall lead to loss of irrigation water to the farmers who are completely dependent on the canals due to uncertainty of the rains.
The people from various areas demanded that Jammu Metro which is being constructed for the benefit of the entire city should not become a cause of inconvenience for such a huge population of the city. Various alternate routes which include construction of Metro along the Railway Line in Trikuta Nagar shall save crore of Rupees which are to be spent for Land Acquisition. Different organization demanded that route of Jammu Metro should be diverted along Panama Chowk-Transport Nagar-Narwal- Malik Market, Sainik Colony-Greater Kailash-Kunjwani-Gangyal-Satwari and Asia, along the National Highway , which will have stopovers adjacent to all the residential colonies and commercial hubs without disturbing the existing layout of the city on right side of River Tawi.
The circular arterial route will not only benefit huge segment of population but also save huge funds which are otherwise to be paid as compensation in lieu of buildings, land etcetera. This will also take care of the widespread public grievances.
According to sources, the taking a call on realignment and work by Administrative Council on alternate routes is already under consideration.
